Renewable Energy Project Manager

Specialized Construction

Manages solar, battery-storage, and microgrid builds from permitting through commissioning, the project-management path into the fastest-growing segment of the construction industry.

Renewable Energy Project Manager

What is a Renewable Energy Project Manager?

A Renewable Energy Project Manager runs solar, battery storage, and other renewable energy construction projects the same way a general Project Manager runs a building project, managing budget, schedule, permitting, and subcontractors, but specialized around the specific permitting, utility interconnection, and equipment commissioning process renewable projects require. It's a natural next step for a Solar PV Installer who wants to move off the tools and into running projects, or for a general Project Manager who wants to specialize in the renewable energy side of the industry.

Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), Construction Managers (SOC 11-9021), national data — the same code this site's general Project Manager and Superintendent pages use, since BLS doesn't track renewable-energy project management as a separate detailed occupation

Reviewed May 2025. Pay reflects the national wage distribution for this occupation, not a promise for any one job: entry level is the lower part of that range, 5 years in sits around the national median, and 10 years in is the upper part, since pay isn't actually tracked by years on the job. Real pay varies a lot by state, metro area, union status, and employer — scale these up or down for your market. These figures are base pay only: overtime, shift differentials, and per-project bonuses are standard across most construction trades and routinely push real earnings above what's shown here.

Education

Required:
Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field, plus project management experience, ideally including some renewable energy or electrical project exposure; no license is legally required for this role
Preferred:
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, the same credential used broadly across construction project management, and NABCEP's PV Installation Professional certification for hands-on credibility with installation crews
Not necessary:
A background specifically in solar installation; many renewable energy project managers come from general construction project management and learn the renewable-specific permitting and equipment on the job
